It’s week 2 of the Wednesday Wonder, and so we arrive at the letter B. I’m not quite sure what it says about me that this is the entry that stood out when looking through the dictionary(!), but nevertheless here we go…

Baba Yaga

(Russian baba, ‘old woman’, and a word probably related to Old Icelandic ekki, ‘pain’, ‘grief’)

A cannibalistic ogress of Russian folklore who stole young children and ate them. She lived in the remote forest, sailed through the air in an iron cauldron, raising tempests on her way, and swept with a broom all traces of her passing. She bears a strong resemblance to BERCHTA, a goddess of south German folklore.
